Style over 35. Monochromatic holiday style

Welcome to today’s style over 35! Let’s talk monochromatic holiday style! Holiday style is usually always red and green. Why? Well Christianity, has it as red being his blood and green represents the ever green tree. Which symbolizes eternal life because of it’s ever green color throughout winter.

But dig back further, and you will see that  it was prevalent during the Ancient Romans celebrations of the solstice. As well as many other civilizations were using the evergreens and reds for the solstice. In Tudor times it was all about the holly and ivy. More ivy in the house meant the lady wore the pants. More holly the man was more in charge.

Check out my blog post here on my blog thedegreelesshistorian for a bit about Saturnalia. A precursor to modern day Christmas.

But, funny enough the use of mostly red and green isn’t really prevalent until during the Victorian era. The introduction of Christmas trees from Germany to England happened then. And became more popular thanks to Victoria. In Victorian times a variety of colors were used. And it was mostly blue. Some color historians attribute the massive red and green color use thanks to one company. Coca Cola. Yeah. Coca Cola. Thanks America.

Anyways, some people get tired of the reds and greens. So here is my take on holiday wear. Black and white.

A sweater dress is the easiest! I found some cute dresses! And you can really switch it up! A bow around the waist or belt. OTK boots or heels like what I have on will do the trick! I added an old gold Kate Spade and a red bow!
