Christmas trees,history,and pretty things

The Christmas tree, a timeless part of holiday tradition, as prevalent as Santa Claus and Christmas lights. But, where did the tradition start? What are it’s origins? Well , that is what I am going to share with you for today’s blog post! Let’s talk Christmas trees, history, and pretty things!

Ps resources will be listed at the bottom

When I started to find my spiritual path ( want you to know this is hard for me to come out of the broom closet for this) I found I first became interested in it really as a tween, I am 36 now. Anyways that is another story , but I like to know history of stuff and the Christmas tree came up. The tree predecessor can be traced back to Ancient Egypt when  they would dec the halls with palms in honor of the god Ra. The romans would do something similar. But the Christmas tree predecessor  that would be more close to today’s during the  Celtic Winter solstice. They would have ever greens in the home or on the doors. In the northern hemisphere the shortEst day and longest night would be the 21 throughout December 22. The winter solstice! Many ancient people thought the sun was a god and became sick and weary at this time and they would celebrate the solstice because he would be on the mend. They would hang the evergreens to remind them of the greenery to come. Now, it was said in many places they did this decorating to keep evil spirits or witches😆 away. But, it wouldn’t be until 16th century Germany where the Christmas tree would be closer to what we know and love today.

In the 16th Century Germans would start to bring in decorated evergreens in to the home each year,if trees were scarcel they would make a pyramid of wood and evergreen branches with some candles. And some accredited Martin Luther of lighting the first Christmas tree with candles. It was said that on his way home from Mass he saw how the stars were twinkling and wanted to bring that home. So he wired candles to the Christmas tree in the main room.

Most 19th century Americans did not really get the whole Christmas tree thing. German settlers in Pennsylvania were the first recorded use of the Christmas tree in 1830. Even though, there was many who had the trees in their homes before that. The 1830 one was the first recorded tree usage. Many German settlements had Christmas trees as early as 1747, but for many in America in the 1840’s the Christmas tree was seen as a Pagan symbol and so not in much use. It isn’t hard to understand why though, considering America’s history of strict religious beliefs (thanks in part to the Puritans) the Puritans believed Christmas was sacred and William Bradford did his best to “stomp out pagan mockery” when it came to Christmas, meaning in part the tree. Oliver Cromwell spoke out again “heathen traditions” such as Christmas carols, Christmas trees, and any other joyful occurrence in observing Christmas . Believing it was desecration of  the sacred event. Just so you know in 1695(3 years after the trials) a law was enacted that any observance of December the 25th except a church service a penal offense. Which continued until the 19th century when Irish and German immigrants ignored it and did the jolly anyways.

In 1849 , an epic yet fashionable sketch of Queen Victoria and her husband and children were set in front of the Christmas tree. Making the tree ever popular again! In the 1890s ornaments were making their way onto trees in the home everywhere fromGermany. The Victorians loved baubles . Many Victorian English liked smaller trees whereas their American counterparts (that’s us) liked the trees from Floor to ceiling. Decorations were in most part home made. Popcorn that was dyed, marzipan cookies and colored paper ornaments. The invention of electricity and Christmas lights meant that town squares can have trees lit for days on end and they started to pop up everywhere. And having a Christmas tree up in the home became an American tradition.

30 to 35 million Christmas treesEach year are sold. There are around 21,000 tree growers in the USA.And Christmas trees are grown throughout the states. It takes 15 years to grow one for cutting. The first artificial tree was made in the 19th century was made of feathers that was dyed green!

Construction workers started the Rockefeller center tree tradition in 1931.  In 1840 the first Christmas tree was introduced in France by  duchesse d’Orleans. Christmas trees have been sold commercially in the US since about 1850. In 1887 to 1933 a fishing boat called Christmas ship would tie up to the

Clark Street bridge in Chicago. The 14th president brought Christmas trees to the whitehhouse.the was Franklin Pierce. It was actually Thomas Edison assistant that created Christmas lights.in the past cherry or Hawthorne replaced Christmas trees for a whole. Theordore Roosevelt banned Christmas trees for “environmental” reasons. Tinsel used to be made of lead. And thusly was banned until made of plastic.
